Health Issues
Insulinoma is a common tumor in ferrets. Also known as pancreatic islet cell tumors, insulinomas are tumors of insulin producing cells in the pancreas. These tumors produce excess insulin which results in low blood sugar. The tumors are often malignant but can be managed for a significant amount of time through surgery and/or medication.
Another common disease in older American ferrets is Adrenal Disease. The most common sign of Adrenal Disease is hair loss, usually starting at the tail and rump.
Ferrets are also susceptible to the Flu! Most strains of influenza that infect humans can also infect ferrets. The symptoms are similar: sneezing, decreased appetite, and lethargy. Just as with humans, the flu runs its course over 5 or more days. Unfortunately with older and young ferrets, it can be fatal. If you have flu symptoms you should limit your contact with ferrets. Wash your hands frequently to help prevent the spread!
