Aries & Hermes

The people were moving so they dumped their 10 year old bald baby and his cagemate at Petco.

We don`t understand how they could just walk away from these kids after so many years----maybe it`s because the ferrets` potty habits are a bit sloppy (This happens, sometimes, with geriatric ferrets!!!) Maybe it`s because they can`t deal with the upcoming deaths of these two....

We have the utmost respect for the Rockford Petco for calling the GCFA who recommended us. This Petco went the extra mile to insure that Aries and Hermes will be loved and cherished for the rest of their days. They will also receive proper veterinary care. Hermes will be getting a lupron depot (shot) in November.

That`s what this is all about---standing by them until the end.

UPDATE ON HERMES: July 16th, 2004

Hermes was so clumsy he was cute. His pot belly caused him to waddle and he carried his long, bald, rat tail up in the air as he scampered all over the room. Such a happy boy. He was not a surgical candidate because he had a mass in his abdomen (a large one which was surmised inoperable). After his lupron shot, his appearance became even more comical. He re-grew a strip of long fur along his backbone but nowhere else. The shot relieved the itchiness and some of the urine problems, making him feel better, but the rest of the fur never came back. He had one bout of flu this past year, but otherwise acted healthy and pain free until a few weeks ago when he began to slow down. You know the rest of the story, I`m sure, as you`ve heard it many times before....

He still ate, drank, and toddled around the room, but for shorter and  shorter periods of time. He clung to life--he loved it so much...

He left us last night between 7 and 7:30. I will miss our optimistic, funny little boy. He just drifted away from us in his own good time. I had given a light dose of pain meds just to be sure he wasn`t uncomfortable. Bless his heart. I wish he could have joined us sooner...

Aries is very crabby now--and he never has gotten along with the others. I will have to see if we can change that...
