Harriet & Jenna
Jenna
When Lucy, who was one of Cathy's first rescues, crossed the Rainbow Bridge, Cathy held a visitation so that Lucy's human friends could come and say goodbye to her. (Everyone who knows Cathy and her ferrets gets really emotionally involved...you just can't help but be so.) During the visitation, Cathy's phone rang. It was Animal Control telling her that they had two more ferrets that needed homes ASAP...one was scheduled for euthanasia that night and one for the next day. Even though Cathy was grieving the loss of Lucy, she couldn't turn away these two little girls. (Webmistress' note: Cathy has the biggest heart of anyone I've ever met, without a doubt!) So Cathy said yes and brought home two new additions. The two girls are both very sweet.
Harriet is a medium-colored sable. She was a stray that was picked up by Animal Control. She was filthy and underweight. She had a matted, thinning coat, a sparse tail, and long sharp nails!!! She is probably around five years old. She needs lots of handling and love. She is quite timid and has probably spent all of her life in a cage. She is showing beginning signs of adrenal disease and is now on melatonin.
Jenna is a dark sable, maybe four years old. She looks pretty healthy and is very sociable!! She was also a stray and came in dirty with some burrs and long, sharp nails!
Both girls had spent a week caged up at Animal Control and then were placed in quarantine at the Sanctuary. (All new members to the family are quarantined for at least a week, during which they are observed often and have fecal checks done.)
Cathy did ask the staff at Animal Control if they were picked up in the same area, she wondered if they were picked up a day apart but might have been roommates. However, they came from two different towns, far away from one another.
We will post updates on Harriet and Jenna and pictures of them as they become available. Please check back often to learn more about the ferrets here at the Sanctuary and to see new pictures!
UPDATE (by Zoo): April 9th, 2004
Harriet has been losing weight for the last couple weeks. Still running around the room like a little streak-- still climbing on top of the cages-- still eating, drinking, and going potty just great---but we could feel a huge lump developing as the weight dropped.
She did great, clear up until the last two days when she just stopped eating. She let me know the time was right for her.... She decided not to wait for assistance. She passed on the way to the vet---sleeping peacefully in her cuddle cup on the seat next to me.
I will miss her sweet face and her positive attitude.

Jenna has been doing great all these months. Her last vet visit, the vet discovered a large, palpable mass in her abdomen. We dicussed the options. Surgery is one of them, but not recommended due to the location of the mass. She also has adrenal gland disease. We are opting for lupron to provide symptomatic relief and a low dose of pred to slow/reduce the tumor in her tummy. Her condition hasn`t changed in the last eight months.
Jenna plays hard, then climbs up to her apartment, (which is the top level of a Martin`s condo) when she is tired. Her appetite is super. She`s a happy little girl.
More later!
