Sunshine

A BOY NAMED SUNSHINE...

On April 8th, 2008, Sunshine joined the family at Zoo`s Ferret Sanctuary. The college student who brought Sunshine said he didn`t have time for her. His friend had found her outside, about three months prior, and she wouldn`t eat. He had gotten her to eat, but he really didn`t want the ferret. He wasn`t much into scooping poo--and BTW Sunshine had a tumor on her chin...He asked if we were a no-kill shelter.

When Sunshine was taken from the cage, He (yes HE!) was shaking & drooling. He did the splits when we put him down, and could not stand. Sunshine`s blood glucose tested at 28. Normal is 80-120 for a ferret. He is severely insulinomic.

The growth on his chin is a skin tag.

Sunshine is somewhere between seven & eight years old. He is out of quarantine, doing well on his meds, and is very good with others. He`s a cuddler, and a kisser! I firmly believe he`d be dead by now, if we hadn`t been here.

UPDATE: June 1st, 2008

Sunshine did very well on his meds. He ran & played once again, and got along with absolutely everyone. Last night, he didn`t want much soup. He only wanted to sleep.

When I went to give him his meds today, he had cuddled down in his hammy & gone to sleep for good. It was a bit of a shock, as he had been doing so well. Fortunately, it looked as though he had died painlessly. He was all snuggled down in a little circle, and had a peaceful expression on his sweet little face.

I`m glad we were able to give him at least two more good months.

These goodbyes are getting a bit rough. Does anybody else understand how precious these creatures are?

We will miss our sweet Sunshine.
